Despite planning to, I didn’t actually fast yesterday. I unexpectedly got some time off from work in the middle of the day (it’s complicated), so I went home for a few hours. Most of the chocolate almonds from the previous day were still in my cupboard, and I had leftover grilled chicken in the fridge, so, with an unplanned break on my hands and nothing really grabbing my attention at home, I finished the rest of the food off. I did still lose a bit of weight, and that was actually a surprise (those chocolate almonds pack quite a caloric punch), but I probably shouldn’t have come home with no plan with regard to what to do with my newly found free time.
I made the mistake of consuming the chocolate almonds before the chicken, and that resulted in such a spike in blood sugar that I felt ill. Until yesterday (when I impulsively bought the almonds), I’d avoided sugar since I began this journey, and I hadn’t eaten anything prior to coming home for my unexpected break, so I probably shouldn’t have been surprised that my body had such a negative reaction to the sudden dump of sugar into my blood.
Sugar is a topic I’ll revisit in depth at some point on this site because it’s such a huge factor in diet and its consumption has several very negative consequences for the body. Although I love sugar, its refined form is basically poison, and avoiding it reduces the risk of all sorts of maladies, including what is being termed “type 3 diabetes” (more on that can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/4ahcxpu4). I’m realistic, though: I’ll never be able to give up sugar completely. However, if I can better manage my intake of the stuff, the benefits to my health will be significant.
I woke up grumpy today for some reason, so this post is as a result a short one. I plan on fasting today and tomorrow until the evening, so I should lose at least a bit of weight to close out the third week of this experiment.
